Paso Study 2

A series entitled “Paso Studies” was inspired by my experiences in Peru. Focused on Peruvian Pasos, my days were spent riding, attending horse shows or visiting breeders of these beautiful animals. The horses grazed in an open area at one end of the hacienda surrounded by bougainvillea-covered walls. Each day I’d don hat and boots, enjoy breakfast on the veranda, then saddle up. The clippity clop of hooves on cobblestone echoed in the courtyard as the large wooden gates swung open and we headed out. Dirt roads that ran through farmland and small villages provided peaceful passage and some friendly encounters with local people. We crossed giant dunes, forded rock-strewn streams and rode the beach to the sounds of gulls and the crashing of Pacific waves. Though my Spanish language skills are limited, the horsemen were patient and eagerly shared their knowledge of Peru and these wonderful horses.
