WALL STREET WARRIOR

Inspiration - Kenya 1982

It was during a quiet evening in the Mara that we came upon a commotion in the long grass. Vultures surrounded a dead cape buffalo. It was not a carcass left over from a kill, but rather the intact body of an animal that had simply died on its own. Like a flock of traders on the stock exchange floor, they jockeyed for position. Some stood atop the fecal-spattered remains; others were attempting to break into the body at its several orifices. I ignored the unpleasantness of the scenario and noticed some artistic aspects, in particular the defiant look of a white-backed vulture situated in close proximity to the tail end of the dead beast. After taking a few reference photos I observed the glances among my three companions. With a laugh I commented, "Hey, this could end up in a museum someday."

During the autumn of 1991 each of these individuals received a card in the mail. It announced the opening of a prestigious exhibition, Art and the Animal. Years had passed and it wasn't until after suffering a personal financial disaster that I finally painted my Warrior. The vulture that had staked a gross claim to the tail end of the dead buffalo, made his debut at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History where he was further selected for the national tour. After museum appearances in five states, he returned home to a perch overlooking my kitchen table.
